Well,
we all made it into 2002, except for my poolside palms. They keeled over
after I dosed my brick paving with weed ‘bugger-off’ (or something)
and of course the rains came down out of nowhere washing it all down
into the flower beds. What that has to do this sports cars I’m still
pondering about.
On
a much better and more positive note, the somewhat lean quorum at the
AGM voted to keep the existing committee members in office. Read
“chairman’s chirp”, thereby exposing you all to my offbeat sense
of humour for yet another year. Well, once again I was trying to get to
grips with a new style in telling our tales. This was just not working
when it dawned upon me that ‘leopards can’t change their spots’.
(what my mother in law used to say about me) So, the upshot of it all
is, you have to read my stuff for another year!!!!
So
then, I will try to bring in a little more of this humour I was talking
about, and to start off, how about some bumper stickers.
Bumper
sticker No. 1: ‘You
can’t catch anything from laying rubber’
Last
year went by so quickly that we never managed to turn out a fourth
newsletter. This means that some of you may have thought we had
forgotten you, and some with short memories may not have remembered the
AGM, this time hosted by Nick Carter. The numbers were few but those
that were there finished off the business quickly and then attended to
the braai and car chat with gusto. Thanks to Nick for arranging the
venue.
One
good thing about keeping the committee from last year is that it saves
me (or whoever would take over the ‘scribes’ job) from redoing the
front page.
The
committee has already sat to discuss this years events and we plan to
keep most members happy with interesting long (not too long) and short
runs. See the calendar herewith for dates to
remember.
Bumper
sticker No. 2: ‘You can’t get sick from smoking your tyres’.
Exactly
what the boys were doing down in East
London early December. Dave Burton especially, who put up the best
times for a Cobra. Boy, was his Cobra running well. Read about the whole
weekend in the article by George Louwrens.
On
behalf of our club I want to thank the boys down in East London for the
invitation and hospitality as always. I really do hope that one day we
can reciprocate. That reminds me of another saying: ‘If you use
synthetic lubricants, its not your car that’s getting old’
I
hear, via the grapevine, that Durban (or vicinity) will soon have its
own drag strip. Now I personally prefer a proper stripper, but everyone
to their own I suppose. The drag strip/race track
sounds great, but unless you are a deep-sea diver, don’t hold
your breath. These rumours have often come and gone in the past, but I
am holding thumbs.
Bumper
sticker N0. 3: ‘A bumper sticker’
We
did have a good turnout at our Xmas dinner at
the Westville Hotel. Jan found a very nice location and together
with Vicky Allen and Karen
Wishart, provided us with a very pleasant evening. If you could not make
it for some reason, take it from me, you missed out. Even
just the sight of all those silly hats was enough to make the
evening.
However,
all last years heavy activities had its toll on the party, we just could
not get the guys to boogie. This brings me back to lubricants……….
no forget it, I’m going to get myself into trouble here.
Rather
another bumper sticker – No. 4: ‘This space for a bumper sticker’
Firstly,
a reminder to please pay your fees. They remain pegged at R100-00 for
the year. Nick Carter is expecting your cheque no later than the end of
February. Please guys, attend to this right away otherwise we assume
that you no longer require memberships and therefore your newsletter and
memberships cease.=
We
start off the year with the SPCA rally (short one) and display. This
first one is also an early one, so get up in time to get your car to the
Pavilion before 07h00 Sunday 10 February. Refreshments will be on sale
at the venue, SPCA Kloof.
We
start off our dinners with a Saturday evening at Gitano’s Gateway Ph
566 3495). Be there at 19h00 on Saturday 23 February. A few of our
members finished off with brunch there last year and really enjoyed the
experience. If it is good weather wise, we can sit out in the open,
listen to the music in sync. with the water fountains.
Our
club runs start in earnest on Sunday 10 March. Meet at the Pavilion at
09h30 for a fun, but still secret, run to Pietermaritzburg. We are
hoping that all our upcountry members will join us for this one.
On
Saturday 23 March, we once again try out the hospitality of Coimbra
Portuguese Restaurant in Umbilo (Ph 205 5447).
On a number of occasions we have enjoyed this venue, so have
decided to try them one again.
Our
chairman, Doug Wishart, has promised to arrange a great ‘South
Rally’. I think Doug feels this is far safer on his Cobras nose
section. We meet for instructions at 09h00 Sunday 7 April at the
Hyperama car park Prospecton. Don’t
forget a navigator and have your speedo checked out beforehand.
Our
dinner date for April is Saturday 27th. This time a little
earlier so that we can watch the ships coming in and going out from
18h30 at Thirsty’s North Pier Ph. 337 9212. Bring your binocs and
loose fitting trousers.
All
I have for you for May at this stage is ‘Cars in the Park’. This
will take place on Sunday 19 May. We will leave quite early from the
Pavilion. How about seven (07h00). I know it may still be dark and
getting a little colder, but we have to get to our ‘spot’ before
someone takes it over. As previously, we will arrange for a braai to get
our breakfast and lunches prepared.
I
know you have turned the page in expectation, but I have nothing more to
say. I have even run out of funnies. So! Please let me have some stories
(and
some jokes as well) Even
some cartoons will do. As long as they deal with sporting cars (and are
funny) we will use them.
Don’t
forget to keep visiting our website www.cobragt40.co.za
for additional news views and information.
Keep
safe my mates. Always wear your seat belts, and never drive faster than
your angel can fly!
